The Supreme Court has issued the final judgment on civil liability arising from the catastrophe of the 'Prestige', which sets compensation for more than 1,500 million euros to be divided between the Spanish and French, the Xunta de Galicia and other 269 affected .
The high court has estimated the resources of the Prosecutor's Office, the State Bar and the French State, among others, against the civil liability order issued in November 2017 by the Audiencia of A Coruña, in execution of the final criminal judgment on the Case dictated by the Supreme Court in 2016, which sentenced the captain of the tanker to 2 years in prison, which sank in 2002 off the coast of Galicia.
The indemnities must be paid by the parties already convicted, who are the ship's captain, Apostolos Ioannis Mangouras, and the insurance company, The London Steamship Owners Mutual Insurance Association; and subsidiarily, the owner of the vessel, Mare Shipping INC, and the International Fund for the Compensation of Damages due to Hydrocarbon Contamination for the amounts established in the applicable agreement.
