2026 has arrived with a bang. Harry, Ingrid, Joseph, and most recently, Kristin. Spain has been hit by a veritable train of storms, bringing persistent rain, strong gusts of wind, and even snow. The impact of the adverse weather has been significant: several people have lost their lives, roads have been closed and disrupted, and some towns have been cut off. In Andalusia alone, Storm Kristin has resulted in nearly 3,000 incidents.

The continuous passage of these storms at the start of the year has inevitably left a trail of property damage. Given this situation, FACUA (Consumers in Action) recommends that those affected report the damage to their insurance companies as soon as possible so that they can handle any claims.

The association reminds consumers that the Insurance Contract Law establishes a maximum period of seven days to report a claim, unless the policy stipulates a longer period. Furthermore, it is advisable to gather all possible evidence—photographs, videos, invoices, or repair estimates—to facilitate the assessment of the damages.

In addition, those affected may be entitled to compensation from the Insurance Compensation Consortium, provided the damages result from what the regulations define as "extraordinary events." This is established in Article 1 of Royal Decree 300/2004, of February 20, which approves the Regulations for Extraordinary Risk Insurance. This article states that the Consortium's purpose is "to indemnify, in the manner established therein, on a compensation basis, for losses arising from extraordinary events occurring in Spain," understanding such events to include "extraordinary floods" and "atypical cyclonic storms," among other situations.
